The “Pills” paintings were created when I started to feel overwhelmed and out of it. I was trying to stay above water emotionally. I painted the first one to express my frustrations and out of body experiences. The other paintings that followed were in response to a variety of emotions. They are about being scared, in love, unsure, and sometimes feeling invisible. The Pills series is about the mental state.
Painting my “Pills” became therapeutic and I usually feel better afterwards. The fatigue and stress I felt during my first painting reminded me of the mental and emotional health crisis that is going on right now. We all try to medicate ourselves in some way to help ease our pains. Some turn to medication which they can eventually become dependent on or it could be something as simple as eating. I would like to empower others to find out what a healthy self care routine looks like in their life.
Whenever I'm feeling down I always get a little pick me up in the form of positive and encouraging words from someone, dancing, or painting my little pill people. Painting is my medication.
